Nutmegger Workshop

Unbelievable work from Portland based sign company Nutmegger Workshop. They specialize in vintage sign art and do so with unbelievable expertise and adeptness. This kind of stuff blows me away. I really want to get my hands on one of these.

Sometimes to build up inspiration I enjoy flipping through image bookmarking sites such as the widely known ffffound or designspiration but I recently came across GreyHandGang which is actually ran by only one person, NYC designer Colin P. Kelly. He has an incredible collection of images that really have a lot of depth and nostalgic qualities that you can’t keep your eyes away from. I could scroll through his site for hours and lose all track of time.

Eames Lounge Chair 06

Well I finally got to sit in the Eames Lounge Chair when I visited Room and Board the other day and boy it doesn’t disappoint. It’s even more beautiful in person and is definitely as comfortable as it looks. I really enjoy the contemporary balance of the woodgrain and leather and the overall “lounge” shape of the piece. This chair is so inspiring that it is housed in museums in NY and Chicago, has its own fan website and even has its own book, The Eames Lounge Chair: An Icon of Modern Design.

The book is definitely worth checking out as it documents the evolution of the chair and the impact it has had in cultural society. It provides great insight from Ray and Charles Eames and is filled with many photographs and illustrations. When Charles Eames was asked to explain the overall design and experience of the chair he described it as “the warm receptive look of a well-worn first baseman’s mitt.” This is definitely a “Wish List” item.

I’ve really been enjoying the work of Austin design firm McGarrah Jessee lately. The Shiner, Whataburger and Central Market projects are my favorite. Great overall execution and consistency throughout each brand.

Atlas on Dribbble

Atlas on Dribbble

I was just drafted to Dribbble and began posting work this past weekend. For those who don’t know what Dribbble is, it’s basically a show and tell for creatives. Designers, developers and other creatives share shots—small screenshots of the designs and applications they are working on for others to gain an insight and offer feedback. You can find my profile at dribbble.com/atlas. Look out for more shots soon!
